Mathematics
The GreenMount School uses the Saxon Publishing Math Program in teaching mathematics. The
following description is based on the information in the Saxon curriculum materials.
Saxon uses a technique called “incremental development,” which introduces topics to students in
spaced steps. The steps are paced to enable the students to gain confidence at one level before moving
to the next. In lesson after lesson throughout the year, previously learned information is reviewed and
practiced. Learning is systematic and sequential; as lessons are mastered, they are reviewed and made more
challenging.
Because mathematical basics are continuously reviewed throughout the entire
Saxon program, it is impossible to describe here the entire scope and sequence
of the program. A detailed list is available in the GMS office
or on the Saxon website.
Grades 1-4
The scope and sequence for math in grades 1-4 provides an opportunity to examine
the mathematical content and
development under four major strands:
- Numbers and Operations
- Geometry and Measurement
- Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability
- Patterns, Algebra, and Functions
Grades 5-7
The scope and sequence of the mathematics series for the middle grades provides an
opportunity to examine the mathematical content and development under six major headings:
- Numbers and Operations
- Geometry, Spatial Sense and Measurement
- Patterns, Algebra, and Functions
- Data Analysis, Statistics and Probabilitys
- Representation
- Problem Solving and Reasoning
Grade 8
The scope and sequence of the Algebra mathematics series provides an opportunity to examine the mathematical
content and development under eleven major headings:
- Maintenance and Arithmetic Skills
- Graphs
- Number and Set Concepts
- Number Theory
- Geometry and Measurement
- Ratio, Proportion, Percent, Rate
- Exponents and Roots
- Statistics/Probability and Variation
- Algebraic and Higher Order Skills for Expression
- Algebraic and Higher Order Skills for Equations
- Algebraic Skills for Functions
