In the Spring of 2004, Gabrielle Martino, PhD, in conjunction with
Jennifer Lee, the third and fourth grade classroom teacher, developed
and taught a botany unit as part of the class' science curriculum.
The unit focused on the flowers of the spring blooming plants growing
around the school. The children typically identified and gathered
the flowers outside and then brought them back to the classroom to
dissect them. Taxonomy, structure and function were discussed, as
well as some of the uses of the plant. The children were
cautioned that though wild plants are used extensively for both food
and medicine, they are never to eat them without a responsible adult's
instruction. The handmade book above was the model book, and each
child produced his or her own version.
