Community Inter-Action

At GMS, we believe that every individual has a responsibility to contribute positively to the surrounding community and the world at large. This belief goes hand-in-hand with our practice of enhancing the learning experience with concrete action in "real world" contexts.

GMS has an 8th grade Service class designed and taught by our teaching staff. The class examines issues of social justice in our local community as well as the nation and world. We explore these issues in depth to deepen the understanding of the root of these problems. We take the time to come up with solutions and become involved in any issue a student chooses to. The class leads its own service projects which include the whole community in an age appropriate way.

Program Philosophy: Service Learning cannot be an "add-on" to the curriculum or an occasional special project. It must be integral and constant. To be effective, Service Learning must be infused throughout the curriculum and the school in many ways and with many models. It is not a separate class or a separate endeavor, and it is not labeled; Community Service is beyond an act of doing, it is a way of being.
