Keystone Programs
GMS is known for a range of unique “Keystone” programs that link the foundations of the school with core academic curriculae. These programs, described below, provide critical information within a social context as a means of educating “the whole child.” Environmental ExplorationsEnvironmental Explorations is an open-ended course of study for grades K–8, centering on ecological exploration and study, understanding of artificial and natural environments, and service learning. This program employs the guiding principles: Appreciation, Advocacy, and Action. ApprenticeshipsThe Apprenticeship Program teaches our seventh and eighth graders responsibility, initiative, and service through real-life work experiences. During the second half of the year, students spend one afternoon a week performing internships at local business and service organizations. Apprenticeship Survival Guide. International ProgramDuring a week abroad, eighth-grade students spend time touring and discovering a foreign country, staying with host families, and attending school. Academic preparation includes an independent study project on the country to inform travel and communication. In past years, students have traveled to the Netherlands, Scotland, Iceland and Spain. In 2011, our student will be going to Costa Rica where they will stay with local families, attend a local school, and participate in a service learning project. HabitsDuring this class, 6th to 8th grade students examine their own habits, character, beliefs, and ideals. They explore personal goal setting, self-discipline, and reflection. Cultural StudiesDuring this class for K through eighth grade, students examine elements of culture—including geography, government, history, art, sociology, anthropology, intercultural relations, and conflict resolution—while learning about different world destinations. Community DayAt the weekly community day program, the entire school comes together in a shared activity, across grade level, experience, and age. Developing relationships across social boundaries is one of the goals of this program. For many activities, students partner with their "buddy" in another grade. |
