K-8 Thematic Learning
Each trimester, K–8 instruction at The GreenMount School coalesces around a new theme that provides a launching pad for interdisciplinary learning. Past themes have included countries or regions, periods of American history, forms of human expression, such as sports and music, and science topics, such as environmental justice and conservation. As our program continues to evolve, new, broader themes will provide greater opportunities for students to apply learning in all subjects toward making positive change in their communities and the world.

Theme-based studies provide meaning, engagement, and relevancy to subjects that otherwise can be abstract. As students make connections across disciplines within the context of the real world, they apply and integrate skills and content in reading, writing, mathematics, science, art, and drama. Learning is supported and deepened by field trips and special guests who provide additional opportunities for curricular integration and contextual understanding.
Each trimester ends with a culminating Theme Event. During Theme Events, parents and guardians, relatives, and friends gather on campus to experience students’ performances, dramatic plays, and presentations. Community members play a valuable role in extending student learning by serving as an authentic audience and asking students questions about their research and discoveries. With every presentation and performance, students strengthen their identities as community leaders in developing our collective knowledge.
Graduates of our program develop exceptional skills in:
- Public speaking, creative presentation, and dramatic performance
- Research methods and scientific inquiry
